You may have been struggling with the chatter in your mind. It might tell you “I am not good enough, I am stupid, I am fat, blah, blah, blah”. I know I have had these thoughts.
The problem is that most of us have listened without question for years, that chatter telling us things we have decided must be true about ourselves. Until we decide to change the chatter.
Having thoughts about who we are is something we all do because forming an identity is very important. The problem is that often this identity holds many untruths, and because this identity is now embedded into our unconscious mind, we behave in the way we think we “should”. And all the while there’s that niggly feeling that something is not quite right.
What’s needed is a mindset change, because any form of negative mindset is bad for your weight loss goals and your overall health!
Here’s the amazing stuff that will happen if you change your mindset about your identity:
You’ll Reach Your Goals
Let’s say you decide you want to lose some weight, so you start watching what you eat very carefully. But after a few days nothing seems to be happening, so you have something you feel is “naughty”. Then because you ate that thing you think “Oh well, I blew it, let me eat everything I can see today and start again tomorrow” and feel terribly guilty. And then tomorrow comes and you can’t be fuzzed.
What’s happened here is that part of your identity is “I am fat” so you are creating that situation for yourself over and over. (I know that may sound a bit woowoo to some of you, but it’s true)
So by flipping the script you can change the thought if you do go off track – “Oh look! I just ate that thing! But that’s okay, I am learning a new skill. So I will just use it as feedback and carry on from now on my healthy path.”
You’ll Become Who You Want To Be
Often we have an idea of who we’d like to be, what things we’d like to be doing. Using the same example of wanting to lose weight you may want to be lean and toned so I can in control of your body again and feel like you look amazing (Awesome goal!)
But if your identity and mindset remind you all the time: “I am fat and not good enough”, why on earth would it let you achieve something else? You said you are this person, now your brain works hard to make it so and keep you safe. “Good Grief! Don’t be silly, that’s not who you are! Get real Girlfriend!”
Catch yourself if you find yourself saying nasty things to yourself. Would you say these things to your best friend?
By flipping the script you can feel more in tune with who you are, and become a more balanced person – “I am enough, and I deserve to be happy and calm.”
You’ll Live In The Present
All this blah blah blah that is going on and the constant hamster wheel of reinforcement of your mistaken identity is not helping you to live in the present. Wish – Try – Fail… over and over again.
All that is happening is you are living between the past and the future. Do you get that?
The past is where you formed this identity. It formed to keep you safe after learned behaviours and attitudes became ingrained. The future is your wishes for yourself because you know you can be a better version of yourself.
The present is the only place where things happen. So you need to take action today, and every day! You can’t keep doing the same things over and over and expect a different result 😉
What is one small thing you can do right now to move you towards that person you want to become? “I am an action taker so I am going to….”.
As Nelson Mandela once said – “It always seems impossible until it’s done”
Now go and do that thing! And then give yourself a high five 😊
