“The Best Diet” is a contentious subject at the moment. There are so many ideas out there. Vegan, Keto, Low Carb, Low Fat, Paleo. So how do you know which one is best?
Firstly, let me say I have nothing personally against any of these “diets”. What I do have is an aversion to labeling. Let me explain.
Labeling puts you in a box. You become your choice. By doing that you cut yourself off from any other ideas, you cut yourself off from listening to your body, you cut yourself off from possible change.
I agree that the modern way of eating has become very unhealthy. Too much processed food, far too starchy carb dominant, not enough whole fresh vegetables and fruit. Because of this vitamins and supplements have become a huge industry in order to address deficiencies that shouldn’t be there in the first place.
Now let’s put this into the context of weight loss, especially around the time of menopause.
By the time we reach menopause, the majority of us will start to pick up weight. There is a natural slowing down of metabolism as we age, partly due to a declining muscle mass. But we can’t blame weight gain wholly on metabolism.
As a menopausal woman, you also have hormone changes to contend with. Most of us arrive at this point with hormone imbalances caused by the stresses of years of yo-yo dieting, raising families, looking after aging parents, careers, lack of sleep, etc. This type of stress causes your adrenals to become compromised.
Because our hormone system is supposed to be a well-oiled machine that works as a whole to keep you at optimum health, and the adrenals are supposed to kick in and produce the oestrogen your ovaries were making prior to menopause, it is no wonder that your body produces uncomfortable symptoms and your weight suddenly starts to increase at a rapid pace.
So looking at it from this angle, you can see that in order to start addressing the problem, you need to go back to the beginning, you need to remove stress and finally give your adrenals the time to rest, heal and start working for you.
The first step is to address your nutrition, and this is where the “best diet” dilemma raises it’s head. Because there isn’t one. But there are common sense guidelines you can follow to help yourself:
With a healthier nutrition strategy you will start to see your weight decrease and your menopause symptoms ease.
Our way of eating has become unbalanced and we need to address that. But is there only one way like low carb, keto, paleo, vegan? No. You need to find YOUR way. And that’s why you need to keep an open mind and experiment with what works for YOU.
When I work with clients this is what we do. Find the things that work for you. No “diets”. No meal plans.
