Successful weight loss starts in the mind

Menopause is a time when your thoughts can turn to taking back control over your body and life. So much changes, and things you did in the past to stay fit and healthy just don’t work anymore.

But there’s one thing that can get in the way of the best laid plan, and that thing is mindset.
Mindset is super important when you start your weight loss journey. In fact, it’s so important that it is one of the first things that I chat with my private clients about.

Without the right mindset you can have all the will to make a change, but no follow through.
That’s because your mind is very strong and has developed ways of thinking that have served you well until now, even if you don’t logically agree with them anymore.

In addition, we tend to think more of the negative side of things, rather than the positive. That is an inbuilt safety mechanism, also devised by your brain, based on past experiences, there to keep you safe.

And while being safe is a really good thing, sometimes our definition of safe when it comes to our health is not so great. And it may not serve us anymore.

When that happens you may realise something is “off” and go looking to make a change.

We often start a change process thinking about what we don’t want. After all remember, this is how we are wired – to think of the negative to stay safe.

For instance:
  • I don’t want to be carrying excess body fat.
  • I don’t want to feel out of shape.
  • I don’t want to take all these medications.
  • I don’t want to feel unattractive and unsexy.
  • I don’t want to feel out of control with my eating.
 
That’s a good start. But it’s not exactly a clear action plan, is it? And does it feel motivating?
Say those phrases to yourself. How do you feel? I bet not too great, maybe even a little down?

You have to keep going from there to define what you do want.
 
You have to reframe the statements to sound positive like this:
  • I want to be lean and healthy, with some solid dense bones and muscle.
  • I want to be in better shape — strong, fast, flexible, agile, physically capable.
  • I want to take fewer medications or get off my medications entirely.
  • I want to feel attractive, energetic and sexy.
  • I want to eat normally, intuitively, and sanely. I want to nourish my body with wise food choices.
 
Now say these statements to yourself. They feel way more inspiring, don’t they?
Positive statements also start to give you a blueprint for taking action, because now you know what you DO want. From here you can develop your plan.
