Ever notice when someone says "I've tried everything" to lose fat, it's always every diet on the market? The Atkins diet, the Zone diet, 5:2 fasting, Weight Watchers counting points, Detox diet, “pick a food group” diet, Jenny Craig, shakes and supplements?
There's always that one person who SWEARS they weigh and measure every gram and then says “but it doesn't work!” Then every third Facebook check-in in a bar or restaurant, right? And you also know they aren't accurately tracking or they're only tracking Monday morning - Friday at 5pm. Or they aren't tracking picking at their kids leftovers. Or all the bites of food they take while they're cooking dinner. Or that glass of wine….
The numbers are never involved.
You never hear:
"I estimated my TDEE to be 2100 calories per day, so I set my goal intake at 1600 calories per day and trained 3 times per week for an hour for the last 8 weeks. I weighed all of my food during that time period and had 100% dietary compliance...............And I still can't lose weight."
Because doing all of that stuff would cause someone to lose weight in 100% of the circumstances. It’s not easy, but it's insanely effective if you've never done it.
Here's the thing though: tracking may be effective but it's not a sustainable solution for most people. Especially the women I work with. We talk about food habits and fad diets....and what most of the them want food freedom. They feel like slaves to their eating habits, to only see food as numbers, or good and bad foods, and are desperate to get away from that way of thinking. It’s like being in prison that leaves you feeling anxious and hopeless about ever having a "normal" relationship with food.
I coach habits, sustainable habits (e.g. eating when hungry, stopping when full). The women I work with don't want to have to pay that much attention to tracking their food... and frankly neither do I. They don't want to have to follow a strict diet or plan, they just need help with their mindset, their day to day behaviours, planning, and their decision making skills. They need to understand that their bodies are a result of what they do with them most of the time.
